Made possible by a grant from Pennsylvania to the CMTA, a patient-family conference on Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disorders will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2008, at the BRB Auditorium on the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center Campus, 421 Curie Blvd., Philadelphia , PA.
The conference will begin with registration and continental breakfast from 8:00 to 9:00 am. Following registration, Dr. Steven Scherer, the sponsor of the day-long program and a neurologist from the University of Pennsylvania, will discuss the characteristics and causes of CMT as well as the current research being done on the disorder. At 10:00 am, Kathleen Platt from Athena Diagnostics will discuss genetic testing, the process and costs, as well as the reasons for choosing genetic testing. At 11:00 am, Dr. Enyi Okereke will discuss orthopedic considerations and possible surgeries for CMT patients.
At noon, attendees will enjoy lunch and the opportunity to speak personally with the doctors and other patients.
At 1:00 pm, the afternoon program will begin with a presentation by Dr. Carol Oatis, a recognized authority on the topic of physical therapy for CMT patients. Next, Gary Michalowski, Regional Manager for Lawall Prosthetics-Orthotics, will demonstrate how appropriate bracing can improve a CMT patient’s gait and posture. Finally, Canine Partners for Life will demonstrate how service dogs can enhance a person’s life and assist with everyday tasks.
Time will be allotted for questions following each presentation.
